Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Using an eye tracking system and a video camera simultaneously with first, second graders, and kindergartners (n=30), we captured their eye movements and reading aloud while reading a picture book. In addition, we conducted a reading comprehension test. We did not find statistically significant associations of reading comprehension test scores with the number of incorrect reading and the speed of reading aloud. By contrast, we found a strong correlation between reading comprehension scores and the frequency of backward eye movements (Pearson’s r= 0.82). A high scorer on reading comprehension test demonstrated frequent backward eye movements and a low scorer demonstrated fewer backward movements. Therefore, we examined the reading backward movements in relation to reading comprehension using graphic data. We found that reading backward is not merely an act of reading to modify incorrect reading but to reflect the effort of constructing deeper meaning between words or between sentences.
