Outline of Final Research Achievements

One of the main problem for treatment effects of chemoradiotherapy with cancer patients was resistance for chemotherapeutic agent or radiotherapy. Recently, the mechanisms of acquired resistant cancer cells were elucidated to cause the activation of Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). PARP was clarified as molecular targets for breast cancer. The expression and activity of PARP were increased in oral squamous cell cancer (OSCC). We showed that PARP was the molecular targets of chemoresistance and radioresistance. PARP inhibitors inhibited the growth of OSCC. The treatment of PARP inhibitor or chemotherapeutic agent or radiation showed the additive growth inhibition effects. We demonstrated the possibility of new therapy for OSCC patients with PARP inhibition.
