Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study considers how Herman Melville depicts “manhood” in his novels. First, I study White-Jacket (1850) and Moby-Dick (1851) by focusing on the influence of body modification on a man’s identity and discuss that Melville depicts “manhood” which deviates from the then normative manhood. Then, I examine Benito Cereno (1855) and Billy Budd, Sailor (1924) focusing on care between men and discuss that these novels indicate male care could be subversive of the social norms on “manhood.”
