Japanese lacquer artist, Seizo Sugawara taught lacquer art to Eileen Gray and Jean Dunand, and influenced Modern Art of France.This study attempts to clarify his personal history correctly by means of visiting his family and referring to documents.
He began to study in field at Kawaseya located in Sakata-City Yamagata Prefecture. Kawaseya was both a shop and a factory of furniture, administer by Ukichi Maruyama. Master of lacquer art were Kishu Morikawa. September, 1901, Sugawara was admitted to Tokyo School of Fine Arts, and continued his study of lacquer art over 3 years, but he didn't graduate. Sugawara departed the Port of Yokohama on November 18, 1905 with Shoka Tujimura, They arrived in Paris on December 26, 1905. As a result of comparing the works of Sugawara, Gray, and Dunant,It is suggested that Sugawara gives the influence not only on lacquer technique but also on the properties of Japanese art and culture.
