| Research Abstract |
This project’s purpose is to present a satisfactory answer to the questions, why the cello did not evolve to become a five string instrument and whether it should do so now.
In order to find those answers it was planned to equip a cheap four string cello with a fifth string and test its properties and then to proceed to the construction of a new, high quality five string cello.
Originally it was planned to have the newly constructed cello finished by April 2014.
However the construction and test results of the first prototype lead to a prolonged planning period before the construction of another prototype and finally the new instrument.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The team had found data about rare five string cellos from the 17th and 18th centuries that lead to the conclusion that a five string cello’s size should be on the small side. Therefore a second prototype was built in a 7/8 size compared to the 4/4 size of the first prototype. The improved test results lead to an extensive search for a model for our final cello.
Finally two instruments were chosen to serve as inspirations for the construction of our final instrument: A five string cello from the Amati brothers Antonio and Girolamo for its inner measures and a four string cello from Giovanni Battista Guadagnini for its outer measures. Both instruments are close to the 7/8 size of the second prototype.
The construction of the final cello started in January 2014 and is now proceeding steadily.
At the same time it was decided to advance the installation of a homepage instead of installing it in the third year of the project it is already now available in English and will soon also be available in Japanese. The homepage shows the proceedings of the project to the newest developments.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the next years we plan to finish the construction of the final cello. The process will be documented on the homepage. The completed instrument then will be tested and compared to the prototypes and master-made four string cellos. The results will be made publicly accessible on the homepage and also made available in a printed version.

当該年度に支払われるはずだった5弦楽器の製作費が遅延し、支払いも次年度へ持ち越しとなったため。
5弦楽器が完成し次第、支払われる予定である。
また、楽器製作に遅延が生じていることによる研究の遅延の代替策として、当初計画していた最終年度（27年度）よりも早く研究発表のウェブページの製作に取り組み始めたため、ウェブ製作費の支払いが計画書よりも早期の請求となる可能性がある。
