Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
After finishing the two prototypes there followed extensive testing. It was finally concluded to build a cello with measurements slightly smaller than a full-sized Stradivari type cello. To copy the Amati's size would result in an instrument with considerably shorter strings, which would make the transgression from an ordinary-sized cello quite difficult. After a lengthy search a Guadagnini cello, builtin the year 1743, was selected as the model for the final instrument. It is a four string cello but is slightly smaller than a 4/4 cello. After some further experiments with prototype II it was decided not to apply considerable changes to the inner measures. The most important discovery during this year was that the addition of the fifth string to prototype II lead to some noticeable sound loss. The next step will be testing how far the final cello's superior crafting will prevent such a loss.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In correspondences with two German cellists, who had themselves built five string cellos, it was mentioned that a stronger bass bar was used to accommodate for the additional pressure of the E-string. In order to test the effects of such an alteration a 5% higher bass bar was installed in Prototype II. The result was a rather remarkable loss of volume on the lower two strings, especially the C-string. It was therefore decided to install a fairly regular-sized bass bar in the final instrument。 During the construction process Doll used the Prototype II to try its usability for several pieces of the baroque and early classic era.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Until this point the construction process did not differ from a four string cello’s construction. From now on a special neck, tailpiece and bridge for five strings have to be produced and attached to the body. As the last step the instrument has to be varnished and then will be ready for extensive testing and comparing. Hopefully the instrument will be finished during May 2015.
