Research Abstract |
The research goal was to investigate the current state of EMI programs in Japan through a survey of all 194 universities offering EMI. In FY 2013 the researchers visited a sample of 8 EMI programs in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto and Kansai and conducted interviews with faculty and administrators. Analysis of the interview data gave initial answers to the main research questions: the faculty and student body make up, the position of EMI in the university, reasons for adopting EMI and factors that facilitate or block EMI program development. Findings of this pilot study were published in Brown (2014). Brown, H. G. (2014). Contextual Factors Driving the Growth of Undergraduate English-Medium Instruction Programs at Universities in Japan. The Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics, 1(1), 50-63.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project has accomplished most of the goals set out for FY2013. A tentative typology of EMI has been developed and factors driving the trend have been explored in a pilot study. Using findings from the pilot study, the researchers developed a survey instrument to use with all EMI programs in Japan. The survey has been piloted and modified, and is now in the process of being distributed.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The survey now underway will be completed in FY 2014 and the data will be analyzed and presented. The patterns seen in the pilot study sample will be tracked through the full set of 194 universities offering EMI in Japan. Also, initial interviews at selected universities will begin. The plan calls for in depth case studies of 4 universities, 2 with established EMI programs and 2 now implementing EMI. These case studies will explore the process of and motivations for developing EMI. These case studies will continue in FY 2015.

Expenditure Plans for the Next FY Research Funding |
Funds for translation, printing and postage budgeted in in FY2013 have not yet been used. The survey research instrument is now in the process of being distributed so those expenses will be incurred in the FY2014 budget. The funds will be used in FY 2014 for postage (40,000円), printing (20,000 円) and transcription / translation services ((185,000円).
