Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The pilot study was conducted in FY2013 and a nationwide survey project was completed in FY2014 to gain insight into how English-medium instruction programs are being implemented around Japan. Both the pilot study and survey results showed a pattern of small scale EMI programs and ad hoc implementation. In a search for best practices, the research project has moved to phase 3, case studies.
The researcher is now conducting case studies at 4 newly forming EMI programs. The study is aiming to reveal how and why programs are implemented successfully.Preliminary results indicate that a lack of coordination and communication is a key fault many EMI initiatives. It seems that successful implementation rests on the following factors: Communication and collaboration among stakeholders; Building a program from scratch rather than as an add on; Integration into the wider department / university curriculum; Identity of the program; Shared sense of purpose / direction ; Understanding of why the university is doing EMI, Time to implement and develop an EMI program; Understanding the actual value / pote; Meeting the global standard of disciplinary knowledge among students; and Faculty and administrator continuity
