Outline of Final Research Achievements

The Middle and Late Formative Periods in the Central Andes witnessed a substantial social differentiation represented by the emergence of religious leaders. The third season (2013) of our excavation project at Huaca Partida archaeological site on the lower Nepena valley revealed additional mural paintings. The analysis of these lately unearthed iconographic evidences, along with the formerly discovered friezes from the same site, allow us to elucidate that the Andean tripartite cosmology and the shamanic leader's intervention were materialized in the ceremonial architecture, and thus to speculate about the relationship between the mural production and the rise of leaders.
