Outline of Final Research Achievements |
It was found through our research that the shift away from handwriting or dependence on personal computers (PC) has rapidly and certainly progressed. The consequence of this trend is the decline of students’ writing ability as well as reading comprehension. Three groups of students were asked to read and answer a same set of questions. The group that read and copied the questions by hand scored higher overall than the group that read the questions out loud and the group that read the questions silently. This result suggests that the act of copying leads to accurate comprehension. The students have commented that PC’s are inconvenient when it comes to planning a writing material, adjusting the relationships between the whole and the parts, and pausing to examine their own thoughts. Moreover the concepts of drafting and rewriting have been disappearing. The ability to accurately write, which used to be trained by repeatedly employing those two acts, is facing a crisis.
