This project developed a multifaceted approach to the study of diversity in archaeology and cultural resource production focusing on case studies in Japan. Three themes addressed in these studies were: 1) the education and training of archaeologists; 2) the practices of archaeological investigation (e.g. surveys, excavation, lab analysis); and 3) the interpretation and utilization of archaeological knowledge. Case studies examined archaeological research, heritage utilization at several sites including Amenomiya Kofun in Ishikawa Prefecture, Goshono Site in Iwate Prefecture, as well as educational activities at Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. The model of diversity developed includes examinations of Interpretative Diversity (the complex relationship between authorship, audience, and setting that explains how interpretations of archaeological artifacts and sites will differ based on who is talking, who they are talking to, and the intended message); Participatory Diversity (the collaborative network of actors who engage in cultural heritage activities); and Data Diversity (the ever-increasing challenges relating to incommensurability of data). The results of this research included several published papers, an edited book, and numerous presentations at domestic and international conferences.
