| Research Abstract |
In this project I examine the effects of fiscal simulations on the unemployment. In particular, I focus on its asymmetric effects on “skilled workers” and “low-skilled worker”. The low-skilled worker here refers to those workers with low education background and less working experiences (eg, young workers). Since the unemployment of low skilled worker usually generates rather larger social problems and draws much attention from the policymaker. Therefore, when the fiscal stimulation is implemented, it is important to know how well it can do for this specific group. To explore this issue I construct a dynamic general equilibrium model with the setting of workers’ heterogeneity. I then estimate the model using Bayesian methods. Based on estimated model I can evaluate the fiscal stimulation effects.
In this year my coauthor (Prof. Miyamoto) and I have completed a research paper (published in the Journal of the Japanese and International Economies), in which we estimate a search-matching model using Japanese data by Bayesian methods. The estimated results identify some special features in Japanese labor markets, which are crucial for my research in the next stage.
I also invited Dr. Morrow (currently working in London School of Economics) to jointly work on this project. He visited Japan last summer for two weeks, guided and assisted me on many issues in estimation and model constructing. We also visited several Japanese Universities ( Waseda University, Nagoya university and Kobe University) for presenting papers and exchanging research ideas with other scholars.

Reason
Currently I follow the planned schedule. I’ve also collected the necessary data sets and investigate their cyclic properties. I am constructing the model and will soon work on estimation.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the coming year the research focus is to estimating the constructed theoretical model using Bayesian methods. I'll use the estimated model evaluate the fiscal stimulation effects and conduct numerical experiments to examine the effects of different types of fiscal stimulations.
I'll summarize the results and findings as several research papers. These papers will be firstly presented in university seminar and conferences, and then revised based on the comments received. I'll submit these papers to academic journals.

| Expenditure Plans for the Next FY Research Funding |
A large part of the planned expenditure not spent yet is for upgrading the existing computer severs. This procedure was not implemented because research focus in the last year was the model constructing and data analysis, which both require relatively less computational burden. However, in the coming year, the main work will transfer to those computational intensive tasks - the model simulation and estimations. The computer server upgrading is still necessary and will be implemented soon.
The amount incurred will be used for upgrading the existing computer sever for the model simulation and estimation.
