Outline of Final Research Achievements

Kidney stone resembles arteriosclerosis in the mechanism, calcification composition and epidemiology. Water including oxygen nano-bubbles (nanometer-sized bubbles generated from oxygen microbubbles; ONB water) has anti-inflammatory effects. Based on these anti-inflammatory effects, ONB water has been reported as a useful therapy for atherosclerosis. Therefore, we investigated the inhibitory effects of ONB water on kidney stone formation using a hyperoxaluric rat model. Our results suggest that ONB water reduces crystal retention in hyperoxaluric rats due to decreased renal tubular cell injury and resulting expression of crystal binding molecules (osteopontin: OPN and hyaluronic acid: HA).
