Outline of Annual Research Achievements

今年度は、インドネシア多島海域の水塊変成や海面水温 (SST) への影響を通じてグローバルな気候変動をコントロールしているインドネシア通過流 (Indonesian Throughflow; ITF) の力学を支配する物理機構について、主に、スーパーコンピューターによる高解像度数値実験を行うことによって調べた。
パリ大学 (フランス) のPascale Bouruet-Aubertot 博士から提供を受けた INDOMIX プロジェクトによる数地点での乱流直接観測データとも比較・検討を行った結果、太平洋からインド洋側へ高塩分水を輸送する ITF の東ルートにおける水塊変成には、ハルマヘラ海の海峡部などで励起された内部潮汐波の砕波による鉛直乱流混合や同海域で励起される直径数キロメートルのサブメソスケール渦による水平乱流混合の重要な役割が示唆された。さらに、この数値実験により示唆された ITF 変成の鍵となる乱流ホットスポットを定量化するため、インドネシア国内において傭船し、最新の投下式乱流計 VMP-X を用いた海面から海底直上までの大規模な乱流直接観測を計画したが、最終的にインドネシア側の研究機関・研究協力者と傭船の時期などに関する調整をつけることができず、残念ながら、観測の実施は次年度以降に見送りとなってしまった。
しかしながら、本研究の成果は、今後、インドネシア多島海域が ITF を通じてグローバルな気候変動に果たす役割を議論する上で、重要な基盤として位置付けることができる。
