Outline of Final Research Achievements

A novel sand filtration process packed with super fine silica sand was developed for applying to small-scale distributed water infrastructure.
Evaluation results of the fundamental filter performance indicated that (1) removal efficiencies of particle matters obtained by this filter with the depth of 10cm were comparable with those obtained by the conventional rapid sand filter, (2) even if influent turbidities increased rapidly, those in the effluent from this filter were stable.
In addition, the filter backwash method with mechanical paddle mixing was proposed. Evaluation results on conditions and effects indicated that (3) effects of deposit removal from the filter and homogenization of particles in suspension were dependent on G value for mixing of water on the filter, (4) although amounts of backwash water required for this filter were about 1/4 for the conventional rapid sand filter, over 95% deposits could be removed by optimizing the backwash conditions.
