Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Dormitory songs of the old system high schools emerged under the influence of singing national anthems such as Germany, France, and the United States. At the beginning, the meanings of singing dormitory songs were functional and educational at a ceremony and a sports game. As time went by, the singing dormitory songs grew musical activity. In Taisho era, students improved the compositional and performance skills of western music and acquired a special knowledge of western music. As a result, students directed the both musical and singing styles of dormitory songs to those of art music. Today, dormitory songs are sung as fight songs and this singing style tends authentic. This study reveals that the singing style of dormitory songs is controversial in terms of the tradition and the transformation.
