Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was to examine the performances of Madame Hanako's company which were given at the beginning of the 20th century when Western people had few chances to see Japanese theatres. Madame Hanako was a Japanese actress who toured the West for nearly twenty years and is the only Japanese model to have been used by August Rodin. Through field work research overseas, I was able to collect new materials such as theatre reviews and stage photographs of her performances; as a result I was able to make clear how her company's American tour in 1907 and 1909 took place. It has greatly contributed to the field of study. I did field work research in the UK where Madame Hanako's company also had a base. Through this research, I was able to hit upon a new research topic, namely‘The Influence of Japanese Touring Theatre Companies' Performances on Japonism in Theatre’.
