Outline of Final Research Achievements

Based on Funahashi's materials after World War II and their relationships with the contemporary intellectuals and the field of politics, economy and entertainment, this project examined the historical significance of his postwar works in a more "popular" direction. connecting the result of this examination to that of another examination about Funahashi's prewar works (JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number JP:24652055) enabled this project to comprehend not only Funahashi's works but also the postwar Japanese literature. In particular, organizing the materials such as the 1,000 letters sent to him by various public figures as well as the documents referring to "Hana no Shogai", a fiction originally written by Funahashi and was adopted as the very first NHK's "Taiga" drama, brought a new perspective that the postwar American Occupation of Japan had a critical influence upon the people of Japan and its society much more than expected, and that was what drove Funahashi to write historical novels.
