Outline of Final Research Achievements

Studies of literary works are rather mature in the field of Indology. Taking the Sanskrit Epic Mahabharata as an example, I have tried to apply the methods in the field of Japanese classical literature, oral literature and comparative mythology to the study of Indian mythology. As a result, many interesting aspects of universality, individuality and literary features of Indian myths have been clarified.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

文学のみならず人文学の学問研究、とりわけ古典の研究は、今や世界的に衰退の途を辿っている。そのような現状において、古典文学の新たな方法による研究は研究者に対しても一般社会に対しても、その存在について振り返らせ、その価値について知らしめるものであり、学術的意義や社会的意義を持つものと考える。
また、文学研究が十分に発達しているとは言えないインド（古典）学の分野に、日本古典研究、口承文芸研究（民俗学的方法）、比較神話学研究など、他分野の研究手法を導入しようと努めたことは一定程度認められて良いものと考える。
