Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Comparative syntax attempts to give a theoretical account of similarities and differences in structural properties found across a diverse range of languages. In this field, it has been pointed out since the late 1970s that the position for a finite verb varies across languages. In the generative literature, this difference is often explained in terms of the presence and absence of movement. This research project aims to make an alternative proposal, namely the positional differences can be accounted for by lexical properties of finite verbs. Further, we show that the positional differences triggered by dialectal variations and diachronic change can also be captured by changes in lexical properties.
