Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2016, through an off-campus service, 44 hours of recordings of naturally occurring conversations (collected as part of this project) were transcribed, of which 25 minutes were transcribed in detailed conversation-analysis (CA) style. A wide range of communication strategies and interactional competences used by Japanese speakers of English in intercultural communication situations have been identified and documented; e.g.: verbal and nonverbal aspects of conversational repair, topic management. Both raw data and a report on teaching activities based on this project were presented at a research meeting and a conference, respectively. Two research articles were published another has been submitted and accepted. Overall, most of the project's aims have been fulfilled and some surpassed.
