Outline of Final Research Achievements

For five years until last year, I performed a study on cultural activity of Shigenobu Okuma.A representative research result is a book entitled "Okuma Shigenobu" published by Chuo Koron Shinsha.In addition to that, many papers, research presentations, lectures, etc. were left as an outcome.In particular, I clarified how his cultural activities and his political activities are related.Furthermore, I was able to clarify the change of his thought of civilization, especially about peace.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

従来の大隈重信研究の問題関心が政治家としての大隈に着目したものであり、したがって多くが政治史ないし財政史的視野からなされたものがほとんどであった。それに対し、本研究は、彼の文化的活動に着目し、思想史的手法をも交えて大隈重信の活動を検討することによって、大隈重信政治的リソースがどのように形成されたか、また文化的活動の前後を通じて、大隈自身の政治的姿勢がどのように変化したのかを明らかにすることにつながった。
