Outline of Final Research Achievements

Overall, the proposed research went exceedingly well, much more than it was expected at the beginning. That is why the original five-year research got finished a year earlier and a new research program get started.
Major research results include four books (two single-authored and two co-authored), one referred international journal article (English), two referred domestic journal articles (Japanese and English), three referred paper presentations at international conferences (English), one referred paper presentation at domestic conference (Japanese), and three invited speeches at international conferences (English).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

戦時ハワイにおける日本語新聞の報道統制は、先行研究ではほとんど扱われてこなかった。これは、日本・アメリカいずれの学会でも同様だが、とくにアメリカでは「日本語」が障壁となり新聞の報道内容さえ正確に把握できていないのが現状である。本研究には、大戦時の日系人に関する日米両国の学術研究を大きく進展させる独創性と意義がある。
