Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aimed at shedding light on the various forms of the contingent articulation between geography in its broadest sense and public spaces allowing the participation of lay people in nineteenth-century continental Europe. Library, archival and field research was conducted in Dresden, Munich, Antwerp, Paris, Brussels and others. As a result, it was elucidated that pubic spaces, including lecture and exhibition venues, public squares and gardens, have functioned, under different circumstances, as a site where geographical thoughts and practices penetrated into the general public and the public gaze in turn has influenced the content of geography in those times.
