Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aims to explain survival strategies of local industries focusing on the roles of leading firms from a geographical perspective. As a case, firms head-quartered in Shikoku, which are performing active foreign operations, were examined. With analysis of relevant materials and statistics, field research was conducted both inside and outside Japan for multiple times. As a result, this study has revealed that leading firms in local industries have been contributing to develop the local economy as a whole by creating global networks through foreign operations and by maintaining local networks through sustaining the head-quarter functions and highly added-value manufacturing in the locality in collaboration with relevant local institutions.
