我々が確立してきた「低酸素依存的遺伝子発現システム」と「ジフテリア毒素依存的細胞死誘導システム」とを組み合わせ、ジフテリア毒素の投与を引き金に、腫瘍内低酸素がん細胞のアポトーシスを誘導、この細胞群を速やかに排除するモデルマウスを確立した。この実験系を活用した場合に、ジフテリア毒素の投与48時間後に、低酸素マーカー（ピモニダゾール）陽性細胞群がTUNEL染色陽性を示すことを確認した。この様に腫瘍内部の低酸素がん細胞を一掃したタイミングで放射線照射を行うことによって、腫瘍増殖を劇的に抑制できることを確認、もって原発腫瘍内の低酸素がん細胞ががんの再発において重要な役割を担っていることを確認することが出来た。
