Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In June 2015 I organized a panel presentation at the Sociolinguistics of Globalization Conference in Hong Kong with researchers from China and Brazil. I also gave two other presentations with a colleague from Australia on topics surrounding the native speaker. In December 2015 I gave two presentations at the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA) Conference in Adelaide. I presented with a colleague from Australia on student beliefs concerning the native-speaker teacher.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

I have met the goals set for this year. In addition to analyzing previously collected data I have continued to collect Japanese language data from the JREC-IN website. I have been reading further background literature in relation to ideologies of language in Japan. My focus has remained on the idea of definition and accountability in the deployment of the term native speaker.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

This year standardized survey data will be collected from a population of 200-500 Japanese university students. The purpose will be to explore how the term native speaker is conceptualized in addition to student beliefs surrounding the native speaker as teacher. The survey data collected will be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively and will be used in collaboration with the data collected over the previous two-years from JREC-IN.
