Research Abstract |
1 It was in the 15th century japan that the setsuyoshu came into being as a handy japanese-chinese lexicon. Towards the end of the 17th century, setsuyoshu took the form of household encyclopedia which contained, besides the dictionary portion, various lists and guides for daily life. This project has been the first interdisciplinary study of the civilizing role played by those encyclopedic setsuyoshu which enjoyed broad circulation during the 18th and 19th centuries.
