| Research Abstract |
1) Three monoclonal antibodies to visual pigments of crayfish were obtained. Using these monoclonal antibodies it was confirmed that the new opsin is synthesized during winter season. The main factor which affects the synthesis is temperature, not photoperiod.
2) Another visual pigments retinochrome which has been reported for a long time only in cephalopod was identified in the visual systems of gastropod mollusc Onchidium verruculatum.
3) The red shift of chromophore when introduced into opsin depends primarily on the length of the conjugate double bond.
4) 3-hydroxiretinol was found in crayfish retina and it is hypothesized that this compound may be an intermediate in chemical transition process between retinol and 3-4-dehydroretinol.
5) One of the chromophores in the retina of firefly squid, Watasenia scintillans is 4-hydroxyretinal in addition to retinal and 3-4-dehydroretinal. And the squid also has three different kinds of visual pigments. The localization of these pigments were confirmed. It was suggested that the squid has color vision.
6) New retinal binding protein was found and characterized in the photoreceptor cell of cephlopod squid.
7) Hypothesized degeneration process of visual pigment in Drosophila was confirmed by use of monoclonal antibody.
8) Prominency of the secondary peak at the near-ultraviolet region in the sensitivity of peripheral photo-receptor cells of fruitfully may be related to the metabolism of retinoid but not opsin.
9) Presynaptic region has abundant microvilli and the cytoskelton around this region was described.
10) Changes in the concentration of Ca2+ give potential effects on not only signal transduction processes but also photo-chemical reaction of visual pigments after irraidation to octopus retina.
11) Pramecium and Chlamydomonas have rhodopsin like antigens.
