Research Abstract |
Comparing Choshu-han with other Hans (Clans) in the Chugoku district, its features were investigated. We have examined: (1) land policy of Choshu-han, particularly, the state of policy, characteristics, and the crop, with special reference to land control (Kenchi) during the periods of Keicho, Kan-ei, Jokyo, and Horeki, by means of historical documents of farm districts, and then made a comparison with those of other Hans in the Chugoku District. (2) The tax system of Choshu-han throughout its history In terms of its content and graded divisions. (3) The state and the graded division of village expenses in Choshu-han, and investigated the total feature of village load. (4) The local special products of Choshu-han, namely paper and candles, and investigated monopoly of them according to its graded division. (5) Rule relationships between Han, nominated land owners (Kyuryoushu), and community leaders (Shoya), and the characteristics of the ruling of farm districts in Choshu-han were investigated from the standpoints of villages.
