人間が作り出す人工的環境や物質文化、人間の身体、それらの相互作用の中核にあって文化を生み出す心という３つの視座の下に、出ユーラシアを果たしたホモ・サピエンスの最終到達地域であるアメリカ大陸・日本・オセアニアを対象として、各地域で相互に独立して展開した文明形成期の物質文化に焦点を当て、ヒトに特異的なニッチ（生態的地位）がいかに形成されてきたかを検討する。身体を介した物質と心の相互浸潤モデルに基づく学際的研究により、人工的環境構築によって人間の心、身体、社会がどのように変わったかを分析し、文明を生み出す人間の特異性と文明創出メカニズムを解明する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Through plenary sessions, unit research, and international conferences, we promoted collaboration, sharing of results, and discussion among members to achieve the primary goal of our project to establish an integrated collaborative research system that transcends regional and disciplinary boundaries.
Our unique approach to the formation of culture as a system of knowledge, supported by the material environment produced by people, with a comparative study of the actual conditions in the Japanese archipelago, Mesoamerica, the Andes, and Oceania, made us clarify the characteristics of each area and a universal mechanism of the formation of civilizations.
By comparing the results obtained from various fields, we developed a triadic niche construction model that integrates biological and cultural perspectives to understand the formation of civilizations. This model presents a consistent view of human history that links the past and present.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
地域・分野の枠を超えた統合的共同研究体制を確立し、文明創出に関わる認知的基盤、物質的環境による心や身体の変化について継続的に研究成果を生み出せる研究基盤をつくることができた。
多くの専門分野に属する研究者、研究対象地域の異なる研究者が、共通する問題意識や概念をめぐって議論することで、多くの新知見が得られ、今後の学術の進展に寄与する新しい課題が見えてきた。暴力や戦争と文明の関係についてコミュニケーションという視点で長期的な変化のパターンを見出したこと、生物学的視点と文化的視点を統合的に理解する三元ニッチ構築モデルを発展させ、一貫した人類史観を提示できたことは、大きな学術的・社会的意義を有する。
