Outline of Research at the Start

本領域ではpHに対する生物学的理解に変革を起こすべく、「pH応答生物学の創成」という新概念を掲げ、がん、発生、中枢神経、海洋生物、進化の若手トップランナーを集結させている。このような組織が単なる総花的な集団ではなく集約的な連携の下、一つの目標に向かうために、総括班はその要として、領域内の緊密な有機的連携を組織し、研究推進方策の検討、領域の評価と助言を積極的に行う。特に、本領域では生物・医学研究者と進化・海洋生物学研究者の接合が枢要であり、班員間の共同研究費は総括班が最大限の支援を行う。また、研究成果の本応募領域外への浸透、メディアやホームページによる社会への発信・広報にも積極的に取り組む。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The greatest achievement lies in establishing a foundation that bridges the significant gap between physiology/medicine and marine biology/evolutionary studies. For instance, through trial and error, we successfully extracted DNA and RNA from the previously deemed impossible source, the Yubieda coral, and became the first in the world to identify its complete genome sequence. Additionally, our outreach efforts, particularly in educating children who are the future, have been vigorous. Examples include hosting public lectures at the National Museum of Nature and Science [attendance: approximately 300 attendees on-site and online combined, including approximately 50 high school students], and organizing a symposium titled '100th Anniversary Symposium' at the Physiology Society Conference. These activities exemplify our commitment to engaging with the public. It appears that we have achieved results beyond expectations in constructing a forward-looking research framework.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本領域は、pH関連生命現象(pH適応機構、pHシグナル)を地球の歴史や生命の進化史という時間軸で俯瞰的に捉えようとするものであり、かつてこれ程までに学際的な広がりを持たせた領域研究は存在しない。本領域がもたらす波及効果は、ヒトを対象とした基礎医学に留まらず、幅広い生物種にとって深刻な問題である海洋酸性化にまで視野に入れたものである。今後さらに海洋だけではなく、大気や温度など気候変動にともなう地球上全ての生命体の適応を、「学術の力」で理解し将来的な解決への道筋を作っていくための、「さきがけ」ともなる。
