Outline of Research at the Start

本研究の目的は、1)意識の質・クオリアの構造を明らかにする新しい心理物理学手法と、2)クオリア構造を数理現象学的に特徴づける手法、の二つを確立することである。

クオリアを直接定義することは難しいが、あるクオリアと他のクオリアとの類似性は容易に記述できる。「関係性から見た間接的定義」を、近年土谷が開発した「大規模報告課題」と組み合わせ、大規模に視覚クオリアとその周辺の関係性を調べ、視覚クオリアを特徴づけるという新しい意識研究手法を確立する。また、関係性をもとにクオリアを特徴づけるための数学的根拠を検証する。これらを通じて、これまで不可能と考えられていたクオリアの定義問題に大きな変革をもたらす。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this group was to establish a mathematical foundation and an experimental paradigm for the characterization of the quality of consciousness (qualia), focusing on the relationships among qualia. Specifically, 1) we introduced "Yoneda's lemma" in category theory into consciousness research, providing a mathematical basis for the idea of obtaining qualia structure from large-scale similarity relations among many qualia. 2)On this basis, we established a Massive Report Paradigm. We applied this to color qualia in peripheral vision, which has long been debated among philosophers and psychologists. We showed that color qualia in periphery and fovea are essentially the same (equivalent) in terms of similarity structures.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の成果は、クオリアというこれまで定量化ができないと考えられていた主観の質に関して、それらの間の関係性を大規模に計測することで、クオリア間の類以度構造を比較する、という定量的科学手法に、数学的な基盤を与えたことである。さらにそれを実験的に利用可能な具体的手法として実現したことが大きい。これらのアイデアは学術的に大きなインパクトを残し、国際的に注目され、海外からの学会のキーノートスピーカー招待などにつながった。社会的にも色のクオリア構造を定型発達と色覚異常の方々で比較するという具体的な方法を提供し、今後の相互理解なども含めた活動につながっていく。
