Research Abstract |
The research has been undertaken to analyze quantitatively the shape, dimension, and arrangement of wood structure from macro- to micro-feature by use of various image analyzing methods. 1. Analyses of naked eye visible objects : (1) Quantitative analysis of shapes of round wood in order to decide the most suitable sawing pattern for getting largest yield. (2) Recognizing knots appearing on conifer lumbers by use of color images and/or temperature distribution images after heating lumber surface depending on species. (3) Quantitative analysis of grain arrangement and texture appearing on wooden panels used in interior space in connection with the psychological responses. 2. Analyses of microscopically visible elements : (1) Quantitative analysis of arrangement of wood tissues by Fourier transformation and autocorrelation methods. (2) Tri-dimensional analysis of fracture surfaces of wood cell walls by use of SEM. (3) Morphological analysis on distribution of chemical components of cell material by use of UV-microscopic image analysis ; morphological analysis of cellulose microfibril. 3. Relations between tissue morphology and wood properties : (1) Influence of wood tissues morphology on ultrasonic transmission and decrement in wood. (2) morphological variations of tissues around knot and the effect on cutting resistances. 4. Wooden raw materials in morphological aspects : Effects of particle geometry, fiber shape and fiber configuration on the properties of particleboards.
