| Research Abstract |
Human and experimental marginal periodontitis reflects the extension of the gingival inflammatory process to include the underlying alveolar bone. The purpose of this research is to examine the cell kinetics of fibroblasts in the region of intact and pathological alveolar bone crest. A silver colloid technique demonstrating nucleolar organizer region-associated protein (AgNOR_s) was performed on histological sections of jaws of experimental periodontitis in dogs. Eleven adult dogs were divided into 1 control and 2 experimental groups (the ligatured group produced by placing silk ligature below the gingival margin for 1, 3 or 6 months ; the removed group fed for 1, 3 or 6 months after removing the silk ligature after 6 months). The results were as follows. 1. The ligature group showed the proliferating sulcular epithelium with ulcer formation. Destructive bone and enlarged marrow revealed the inflammatory and fibrotic changes. The density of fibroblast was higher. The mean number of AgNOR_s counts per nucleus in the periosteal site was higher than that in the cementum site. 2. The removed group showed the regression of chronic inflammatory cells and scar formation. The mean number of AgNOR_s in the cementum site was higher than that in the periosteal site. The results suggest that 1) the epithelial proliferation may occur as a result of foreign body recognition, 2) the pathways of inflammatory spread may follow the course of the fiber system and vascular channels of alveolar bone, and 3) the dense mat of connective tissue fibers may act as a barrier to the spread of the substrate of exudation.
