Research Abstract |
This research project concerns travel behavior analysis with panel survey. We evaluate its applicability/efficiency empirically through examining some actual transportation planning issues. The project consists of two phases : (a) review of existing panel survey technic, (b) empirical evaluation using survey data. (a) Review of existing panel survey technique considers panel surveys concerning transportation planning and travel behavior analysis, which include surveys conducted in Europe and North America as well as the panels our project team have been conducted in Japan. Empirical evaluation using survey data shows evidences of applying panel data for transportation planning. The panels examined are categorized into three types : 1) short-term panel, which focuses route and/or departure time choice, 2) mid-term panel, which assesses impacts of new facility on modal choice, 3) long-term panel, which describes behavior characteristic depending on household life-stage. We examined appropriate type of panel survey for specific issues of transportation planning. Comparison between using panel survey data and standard cross-sectional survey data is also made.
