Research Abstract

1.The discharging phenomena from the slit of a flat bottom container for milled rice and glass beads were observed. The difference between the positions of free surface at the center and near the side wall in the rice flowing was larger than that in the beads. In the rice flowing, the orientation of particles was observed and the rotational motion was small.
2.For circular, pair and ellipse elements, the 2-dimensional simulation results by distinct element method were compared on the grain flowing states in the discharging phenomena. The simulation results by circular and ellipse elements could describe the rice flowing characteristics in the experiment results.
3.Two kinds of particles were filled at each upper and lower layr in a container. A vertical vibration was given to the layr, and the motions of particles were observed. For glass beads, steel ball and brass ball, the free surface was nearly horizontal, and the segregation phenomena that the particle of larger diameter, smaller density and larger internal friction coefficient moves to the upper part of the layr was observed. The diameter ratio of two kinds of particles greatly effected on the separation ratio.
4.The 2-dimensional simulation results of the phenomena by distinct element method were qualitatively agreed with the experimental results.
5.For paddy rice and brown rice, which were filled at lower and upper layr, respectively, the segregation phenomena that paddy rice moved over brown rice were observed. Then the separation ratio was lower than that for the spherical particle, and the free surface was inclined and the paddy rice gathered on the lower surface. It is considered that the orientation caused by the rotational ellipsoid shape of grains generates the flowing characteristics. The segregation phenomena of grains should be simulated by pair and ellipse elements.
