Research Abstract |
Irrigation and Drainage Science in Agricultural Engineering now faces great changes. The main objective of the study in the past was "to improve agricultural infrastructure". Now the science is becoming a study of water-uses which includes regional living environment, natural environment, and sociocultural environment. This research (published book) was brought as a result of the discussion of the researchers in the Irrigation and Drainage Science, on how Hydrological Environmewnt Science should be as a division of Environmental Science and Technology, and water use techniques which satisfy the social needs. About fifty leading researchers have summarized their findings and the outlooks for the their future studies. Their studies are classified into Basic Research Division (Soil Physics, Evapotransipration, Surface and Subsurface Hydrology) and Applied Research Division (Paddy Irrigation, Upland Irrigation, Drainage, and Farmland Consolidation). The history of each research division and the outlooks are also summarized. The possibilities of future water uses for "Creation of comfortable and beautiful rural environment" are also considered from the standpoint of "Symbiosis of nature and Man". There are records of discussion on the future research needs in this context, such as new subjects, new methods, and new applied fields. As a result, the report over four hundred pages was completed. It copies have been distributed to the researchers and engineers all over Japan to give reference, and further discussions are awaited.
