Research Abstract

The purpose of this research is to grasp systematically the consciousness and action in a local life of aged people and the correspondence of family abd community to them. As a way we practiced directive interview depending on a questionnaire to the residents in local communities and non-directive interview to some local leaders. To select the objects, first of all we narrowed the fields to some depopulated areas where aging is more acute, and then we chose Ueno village in Gumma and Ashio town in Tochigi and put surveys into practice, the former in 1996 and the latter in 1997. Both of them are located in mountainous regions and severely under some depopulated situations. While the former mountainous village has a rather general property of depopulated district concentrated with the labor force to cities in the course of industrialization, the latter has typically a property of a mining town, which shows a rapid decrease in population now although prospered with a copper mine before. We thought these districts showed two types of depopulated area important in Japan, and we tried to make clear what was the most needed for the aged people who are living there rather than the local government. In the report we commented on (1) actual living conditions of aged (labor and income, convenience of their daily life, hobby and contact with mass media), (2) the relations between aged and the family, relatives and other generations, and (3) local activities and consciousness of aged. We also thought it was very significant to hear the opinions of local leaders because they knew well about these local matters or problems. We sorted out their opinions and reported them as their living voise.
