Research Abstract |
The stressful situations which were experienced by nurses as beginners at their workplace were classified roughly into two categories ; 'uncertainty about care' and 'conflict with colleagues'. The senior nurses had less experiences of 'uncertainty about care', and more experiences of 'conflict with colleagues' than junior. The frequency of stressful situations had significant correlation with a sence of burden, but the degree of correlation was lower in the situations of 'uncertainty about care'. The categories of coping strategies for the stressful situations were 'seeking social support', 'self-reproof/introspection', 'problem-solving', and 'avoidance/optimism' in order of the frequency. There were significant correlations between 'seeking social support' and 'problem-solving', and 'self-reproof/introspection' and 'avoidance/optimism'. These correlations showed that the nurses coped with the stressful situations using their various strategies. The nurses who perceived lots of support

from superiors and seniors experienced less stressful situations of workplace. The 'generalized self efficacy' had significant influence in the cognition of stressful situations, coping strategies, and emotional responses of stress. The nurese that experienced lots of stressful situations had the high tendency of depression. In conclusion, the effective factors that lessened the nurses' emotional responses of stress were high self efficacy, high perceived support from superiors and seniors, low experience of the confllict with colleagues, and low employment of the self-reproof/introspection coping. Not many nurses hoped their former teachers to deal with their problems of workplace. However, the nurses who hoped so experienced high stressful situations and depressive mood, and tried to relieve thier emotional burden using the emotion focused coping strategies. Just some parts of the overall relevance of factors have been manifested. We intend to analyze the cross sectional and the longitudinal investigations further with the aim of constructing the support system of both workplace and education for the newly graduated nurses' work-stress.
