Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The aim of the current study is to clarify the mechanism of phoneme acquisition in the second language. It has been reported that two types of information are associated with phoneme acquisition, i.e. 1) phonetic information and 2) category information. In the current study, we used a phoneme-discrimination task as an fMRI task, in which the participants were asked to discriminate two Hungarian vowels. They were also asked to learn to discriminate these vowels at home for two weeks with using tablet computers and participate fMRI experiments on the pre-learning, 1-week-later, and 2-week-later. The fMRI data showed that the bilateral superior temporal gyrus showed the significant activation comparing 1-week-later with pre-learning. Our result suggests that phonetic informations are dominantly used in intermediate term in second language phoneme acquisition.
