Outline of Final Research Achievements

Metallic materials, such as steels, with high strength and toughness possess fine microstructure. The microstructure is a pattern observed in metallic materials by microscopes. A new method was developed in the present study, which produces fine microstructure by using structural and compositional fluctuations prior to precipitation.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

鉄鋼材料などの金属材料を高強度化するために、固溶体中に析出物を生成させる方法が知られているが、その析出物が生成する手前の析出前駆段階において固溶体中でどのような現象が生じているかは不明な点が多い。本研究によってその析出前駆段階で組成や構造のゆらぎが発生していることが明らかとなった。
また、その組成・構造ゆらぎを活用することで金属材料の組織微細化に成功し、金属材料の強度を向上させる新たな手法を開発した。材料の高強度化は製品の軽量化に直接寄与するため、本研究成果は、例えば輸送機器の燃費向上などに貢献する研究成果といえる。
