Outline of Final Research Achievements

Normative femininity as constructed in French women’s fashion magazines has changed from elegant to young, cute (which does not signify immaturity as in Japanese culture), strong, independent and emancipated (revealing the skin) since the second wave of feminism took place. This tendency was accelerated by the development of social networking services. In contrast, contemporary Lithuanian women’s magazines tend to respect Lithuanian lifestyle and habits, trends or traditions on constructing normative femininity in appearance. These magazines promote a European style which has changed according to belonging in groups such as the ex-USSR or the EU. We conclude that normative femininity has been constructed in French and Lithuanian media by negotiating among women’s desires, media agendas from mass media to digital media, and social demand according to the movement of media and societies.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的意義・及び社会的意義は、規範的女性像はメディアの発達、社会の動き、女性の自立欲望、消費経済、メディアの変遷、といった複数の要素間で揺れながら構築される仕組みを、規範的女性像を構築する際に重要なファッションという視点から、フランス、及びリトアニアメディアにおける規範的女性像事例研究を通して明らかにできたこと、そして、日本女性像は時代によって規範的女性像を正当化する役割、またはそれら規範的女性像にあてはまらない女性を正当化する役割を担っていたという欧州で未熟な日本女性像が受容されてきた一背景を明らかにできたことである。
