| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In ancient Japan, the “heaven world” was assumed to precede the passage to the pure land of Vairocana. I focused on the idea of the "heaven world" based on "Avatamsaka Sutra", and aimed to clarify the phase of the "heaven world" representation as the other world. In order to conduct research, I set three points of view, (1) the meaning of the "heaven world", (2) the structure of the "heaven world" representation, and (3) the function of "folding screen and shoji". For point (1), I conducted philosophical examination based on reading of the historical documents, for point (2), I analyzed the structure of syncretistic fusion of "heaven world" and "Shenxian world" through examination of the expression of art works, and for (3) I considered the meaning of the folding screens in the Shosoin treasures.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
従来、美術史において、『華厳経』に基づく「天界」という思想に着目し、その美術表象を考究する研究はなかった。この思想の前提には『華厳経』が説く蓮華蔵世界があり、正倉院の屏風は、盧舎那仏浄土を目指す聖武天皇のために「天界」を表象していると見るのが本研究の立脚点である。そこから本研究では、「天界」を他界の一つとして想定し、「天界」表象のありようと「天界」を表現する美術の宗教的機能を考察した。これらはいずれも、従来の美術史にはない新しい視座であり、既知の美術作品が持っている宗教的意味を新たに浮上させる成果となった。
