| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Psychiatric patients present extraordinary challenges: 1. Poor hygiene, 2. Pica, 3. Closed-environment, long-term, hospitalization, 4. Inability to report symptoms, and 5. Uncooperativeness. They can be both source and susceptible host of infection, so preventing outbreaks requires special measures.We conducted a questionnaire, observed ward rounds, and cultured environmental samples. From our findings, we intervened as needed to prevent outbreaks.
High-priority infection countermeasures in municipal psychiatric hospitals can prevent healthcare-related infections and maintain a hygienic environment for treatment by: 1. Establishing a rapid early response system, 2. Building an organizational structure to capture outbreak data from nearby regions and implement stepwise countermeasures, 3. Preventing imported infections, and 4. Suitably improving the environment.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
OECDによると本邦の精神科病床数は人口1000人あたり2.63床と世界1位であり、2位のベルギー（1.37床）の約2倍と軽視できない領域である。市中精神科病院の多くは感染管理専門家が不在であり、感染対策の取り組みが遅れている。これらの病院に共通した問題点や必要な取り組みを明らかにしたことで、感染管理専門家が不在の市中精神科病院でも、患者特性や療養環境の特徴に特化した感染対策の実践が可能となったと考える。今回の研究成果を、市中精神科病院や知的障害者及び高齢者が入居、通所する社会福祉施設などに情報発信することで、感染対策のレベルアップを図ることが可能であると考える。
