Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this research is to derive the momentum transfer cross sections between muon-neutral gas molecules in the thermal energy region by performing muon mobility measurements in a gas using a drift tube method. We fabricated a drift tube with a trajectory detector that detects high-speed positrons that muon decays in the gas.
The momentum transfer cross sections were derived by measuring the positive muon stop position distribution in helium gas at room temperature and 1 atmosphere pressure at the Muon S-line at the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experiment Facility. It has been suggested that a muon can be regarded as a hydrogen isotope in collision phenomena in helium gas at room temperature.

本研究の意義は以下の通りである.
1,緩衝気体によるミュオン減速と崩壊陽電子軌跡検出器を組み合わせることにより,レーザー等の大掛かりな装置を用いずともmeV領域のミュオン原子物理学研究が可能であることを示した.2,熱エネルギー領域の気体中での正ミュオンの振る舞いについて,室温では水素同位体と見なしても差し支えない事が示唆された.環境中のミュオンの挙動について情報を与えるものであり,詳細な第一原理計算による検証が待たれる.
