| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Sustainable farming of local varieties (landraces, indigenous varieties) of crops and vegetables is thought to be important for maintaining plants’ genetic resources and agricultural biological diversity. This study will focus on East Asian countries. Based on the interview surveys and questionnaire survey, the diversity of agri-food culture related to conserving local varieties were evaluated. (1) A comprehensive assessment of continuous vegetable cultivation and seed-saving activities on a regional scale were examined. (2) JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives), elementary school, played an important role in supporting farmers with continuous cultivation of Yamashio-na in Fukuoka. (3) In the case of Kumamoto prefecture, the characteristics of perception and consumption of traditional vegetables by consumers were revealed. (4) It was implied that there were three stages of cultivation of them: livelihood, conservation and creation of value.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
(1)「文化財」とも言われる作物の在来品種の維持・継承を図るために、定量的な分析が難しいとされる複数市町村レベルでの自家採種の傾向を明らかにした。また、各地での伝統野菜を含めた在来品種の保全体制を明らかにした。(2)調査研究と連動して、熊本県内の研究者や飲食関係者、生産者らと連携して、「くまもと在来種研究会」の立ち上げを行った。その活動の一環として毎年、在来種フォーラムを開催し、知見を一般市民などに広く発信すると共に、参加者との議論を通じて、より現実的な保全の在り方についての知見を得たこと。(3)消費者ニーズの特性を示すことで、今後の在来品種の利用促進に貢献する方策を検討した。
