| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
To discover natural products with anti-metabolic syndrome activity, saponins from Liliaceae plants were evaluated in vivo. As a result, cymbopogonol, a triterpene from Cymbopogon citratus, and scillascilloside D-2, a triterpene glycoside isolated from Scilla peruviana bulbs, inhibited pancreatic lipase activity in a dose-dependent manner and decreased serum triglyceride levels in normal mice fed a high-fed diet. Furthermore, some triterpene glycosides from library decreased blood glucose levels in kkAy mice.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
生活習慣の乱れによる内臓脂肪蓄積は，肥満，糖尿病等を惹起させ，メタボリックシンドロームにつながる。近年、伝承的薬用植物エキスの抗高血糖の活性成分が配糖体成分のサポニン類であることが報告され、治療薬のシーズとして期待されている。本研究ではユリ科植物から単離したサポニン系化合物に、マウスの血清トリグリセリドの上昇を抑制する作用および血糖値上昇を抑制する作用があることを明らかにした。またトリテルペン配糖体のリパーゼ阻害活性に関する構造活性相関を示した。これらの基礎研究の成果によりサポニンのメタボリックシンドローム治療薬としての可能性を広げることを達成した。
