Outline of Final Research Achievements

Near-Infrared responsive photocatalytic electrodes were newly developed. They were combined with visible light responsive photocatalytic electrodes in tandem-type configuration, and hydrogen was successfully produced through water splitting reaction with energy conversion efficiency of >2%.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

光触媒やそれらからなる電極を用いた水分解反応は、簡便かつ安価に水から水素が得られる画期的手法として期待されています。一方、特に効率の観点で実用に不十分であることが最も大きな課題です。本研究では、上述の手法を用いて太陽光を有効に利用可能であることを実験的に示し、これまで知られていなかった課題を抽出すると同時にその解決策を提示することができました。さらに、光触媒材料が光を吸収した際に内部に生じる電子と正孔というプラスとマイナスの電荷がどういった経路をたどって水分解反応にたどり着くのか、また、その損失の原因は何なのかというところまでの現象の理解につながる新しい計測手法を開発、一部観察に成功しました。
