| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The global japonica rice for production, marketing, quality/palatability, and consumption was studied in this project. Our main findings are as follows: 1. Many countries have been striving for better quality of japonica rice, and it is particularly so in China; 2. Chinese japonica rice production was found to be accounting for 43% of total rice area, an enormously large producing country, indicating that the share and its exports will increase; 3. A detailed analysis on production costs of rice in Japan, Italy, and California was conducted and found that Japanese costs were 1.5 to 2.2 times as high as of Italy and 1.7 to 2.5 times of California, rendering a new target for Japan to reduce their costs to approximately 100 yen per 1 kg (brown rice base); 4. Production increases of rice in California may be quite difficult due to the economic advantages of the competitive crops over rice such as nuts, fruits and vegetables in the long run.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
ジャポニカ米の生産・消費では他国に比べ突出している中国についてその生産構造や品質改善策の状況を本研究により新たに詳しく提示することができた。また、日・伊・加の生産コストのより精緻な比較手法において日本のコストの削減の目標が示唆されることとなった。これらは、味・品質の観点からも同時に考慮されるべきで、本研究における学際研究の成果が新たな知見として輩出された。世界に広がる日本食ブームに後押しされ、日本の農産物や食産業が海外に進出している中で、本研究の成果は重要な情報になると思われる。
本研究の詳細が本年夏までに著書出版の形で公表されるべく、全研究メンバーにより準備を進めている。
